Fantastic Fall Flying

Miami, Okla., October 9, 2006 – Sunday, October 1, in Miami, Okla., was almost the perfect fall day for EAA Chapter 463's annual fall Young Eagles event. Members of the Chapter flew 74 Young Eagles in nine aircraft including a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, Cessna 172, Citabria and a classic Piper Cub.

Civil Air Patrol units, coordinated by Lt. Cmdr. Capt. J. LeBlanc and Maj. Capt. E. Leonard, from Tulsa, Lamar, Grove, Joplin and Missouri Group V. Supporting the event were 18 senior and cadet members, performing preflight orientation classes and flight line escorts for Young Eagle candidates.

The event got underway at 12:30 p.m. with a pre-event safety briefing for EAA pilots and CAP members before the first flight took off at approximately 1:00 p.m. Joetta Waide and 1st Lt. Capt. Caroll Knotts accomplished the often hectic, but necessary administrative paperwork to ensure that each Young Eagle was credited with their flight.

After sign-in, Young Eagles went to the hangar for a pre-flight orientation conducted by the CAP aircrew from Tulsa using an almost new, fully equipped, Cessna 182 Skylane. Maj. Riera and 1st Lt. Adams rotated at instruction and answering questions.

Maj. Leslie and Capt. Myers supervised the flight line where CAP cadets escorted the Young Eagle candidates to and from the aircraft and assisted them in boarding and deplaneing. After all of the Young Eagle candidates from the local area had flown, the CAP cadets were rewarded for their hard work with their own flights.

After an extremely busy afternoon, Dr. Stewart landed his Piper with the last of the Young Eagles at 4:30 p.m.

EAA Chapter 463 normally conducts two Young Eagle events per year, one on the first Sunday in April and the second on the first Sunday in October. However, in 2006, in addition to the usual events, three others were held, one in May in Grove, Okla., one in June for area Native Americans and one in July for the Boys and Girls Club. Each event saw between 50 and 120 Young Eagles flown.
