EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
What material do you use to make airplanes.

Answer :
It's simply a matter of the designer's objectives for the aircraft, and how to best achieve those objectives. Metal ultimately last the longest, but it might not be suitable for certain aircraft designs. Modern fabric covering is very durable and offers years of service life, especially if properly cared for. An aircraft buyer or builder should find the airplane that best suits his or her needs, regardless of whether it's fabric covered or sheet metal construction.

Thanks for asking!

Joe
