100 Years of Naval Aviation
100 Years of Naval Aviation

One hundred years ago, on February 17, 1911, to be exact, Glenn Curtiss flew his "Hydroaeroplane" to the battleship USS Pennsylvania, which was anchored in San Diego Bay, and landed alongside. A boat hoisted the seaplane aboard the battleship, Curtiss joined the crew for lunch, and following dessert, he was lowered back to the water. Curtiss started the engine and flew back to the mainland. Read more

Two First-Time Builders Let Others Observe, Critique with Live Video Blog
Most days, Brady Lane and Caleb Ihrig are just two normal guys in their 20s: They like sports, video games, music, and, of course, their families. They also have embarked upon an ambitious project to build a four-place Bearhawk from scratch. Caleb is an engineer and likes mechanical things; Brady is a multimedia journalist for EAA. With just basic skills and tools, the two friends are inviting the world to watch them build an airplane through their Dream Build Fly blog, featuring weekly build sessions streamed live from Caleb's basement.

Tyler's Tailwind
One milestone that every student pilot looks forward to is his first solo. There's nothing quite like being in an airplane by yourself, totally in control of your own life and relying on the skills that you've been taught by your instructor. Even though you may be nervous or excited, it's a moment that you should savor. When I first started flying, all I could do was look eight months forward to my 16th birthday when I would be able to solo. I watched the weather and hoped for a nice day during the whole week leading up to that special moment. Then the day finally arrived. I woke up very excited - I was finally 16 and could now solo! When I called for a weather briefing, I found that it would be a windy day, but I still went to the airport and hoped it would be calm enough to fly solo.

Tyler's Tailwind
I met my instructor there and he informed me it was too windy; I would not be soloing that day. I ended up having to wait three more weeks before my next attempt. Next month I'll talk about the flight and tell of the day that every pilot remembers vividly. - Tyler Whitney, EAA 1019639

Each issue, Tyler Whitney of Michigan provides a Young Eagle-turned-Young Eagle pilot perspective on aviation. Tyler was the first Young Eagle to pass his private pilot knowledge exam after completing the Sporty's Complete Pilot Training Course.
